Synvisc Injections Q & A
How does osteoarthritis affect my knees?
Osteoarthritis, often referred to as “wear-and-tear” arthritis or degenerative joint disease, occurs when the smooth cartilage that cushions the ends of your bones progressively breaks down, causing inflammation and pain that can lead to irregular motion within the joint and the development of bone spurs.
Initially, osteoarthritis may simply make your knee feel stiff and achy. As the condition progresses, however, it can cause a significant amount of pain that decreases knee joint mobility and makes everyday tasks – particularly those that require you to bend – harder to perform. You could also experience a grinding sensation or hear loud popping or crunching sounds like the bones in your knee joint rub against one another.
Although osteoarthritis is most common in adults past the age of 50, it can also develop in younger people following a knee injury, such as joint dislocation or tendinitis.
What is Synvisc-One?
Injecting an anti-inflammatory agent into stiff, swollen joints is a conventional approach in pain management. Although steroid injections like cortisone have long been the go-to treatment for knee-joint pain, advances in orthopedic medicine have made it possible to find significant pain relief with therapeutic injections made from natural lubricating substances.
Synvisc-One is a supplemental therapeutic injection that contains hyaluronate, a substance that occurs naturally in the fluid that lubricates and cushions your knee joint. When injected directly into your joint, it increases the amount of fluid that cushions the joint to improve your knee’s natural shock-absorbing abilities and provide effective pain relief.
It’s an ideal pain-management solution for osteoarthritis patients who can’t get adequate knee pain relief from over-the-counter pain medication, lifestyle changes, or physical therapy.
How many Synvisc-One injections will I need?
Synvisc-One is a single-injection treatment that takes just minutes to complete in Dr. Pepper’s office. If you have osteoarthritis pain in both knees, you can receive one injection in each knee at the same time.
For at least the first two days following your injection, you should avoid prolonged weight-bearing activities like running. Depending on your condition, Dr. Pepper can let you know when it’s safe to resume your normal activities.
How long does Synvisc-One last?
Although everyone responds differently to Synvisc-One, most people begin to experience significant knee-pain relief approximately one month after receiving the injection; effective relief typically lasts up to six months.
Because Synvisc-One can be safely repeated, you can to have further injections when your osteoporosis pain begins to re-emerge.
